Here
are some kind and thoughtful letters we
received
from concerned non-Muslims just after the
September
11, 2001 attack where 4 jetliners
were
hijacked by terrorists in New York,
Washington
and just outside Pittsburgh, P.A. U.S.A.
-
I apologize from my heart for any suffering you or your families may have
endured from those whose hearts are filled with hate and cannot understand
the world outside their own homes.
-
I want to add my name to the numbers who have contacted you in support,
following last week's terrible attack on the United States. I am a member
of xxx [a Toronto] United Church and I wonder if you might suggest how
my faith community might be of assistance to you. With love, xxx
-
I am a non-Muslim Canadian who deeply feels the wrong of recent American
and Canadian harassment of Arab and Muslim people. I find this both offensive
and terribly disappointing. As a university professor I will take appropriate
opportunities to speak against these episodes of violence and ignorance
- of inhumanity - in my classes. My thoughts and support are with you,
as is the support of many other Canadians.
-
I want to add my voice in support of Canadian Muslims. You are a valued
part of Canadian society and any thinking person will understand that average
citizens cannot be held responsible for the acts of terrorists. Good luck
to you in this confusing time and the days ahead. After the events of last
week, everyone has been feeling the stress. I'm embarrassed to say that
as a Caucasian, we have not all responded well. I am not Muslim, I was
raised Protestant. It may seem feeble and weak, but I apologize for the
response of this horrific attack. It's an excuse, a shameful excuse for
coating racism in patriotism. There is no excuse to attack mosques or people
due to religion, colour, race or sex. I salute you in your time of pain,
and I hope you know that not all of us feel the same way about the diversity
of our nation. It's one of the things that makes me proud
to be a Canadian. Our diversity. Please, stay strong.
-
I just wanted to add my voice to those who have already contacted you about
the unacceptable behaviour from some people following the tragedy in the
United States. I want to tell you that I am appalled by anyone targeting
Muslims following these attacks and I stand with you in support.
-
I am a Canadian recently moved to New York City, where last Tuesday I witnessed
the collapse of the World Trade Center. I think much of the world is still
in shock as we are here in New York. To see the posters of those missing
is heartbreaking, and you realize how many families, friends, faiths and
nationalities were touched by this disaster. Gone are brothers, fathers,
mothers, sons sisters husbands, wives, daughters; they are Japanese, Greek,
black, white, Latino, Arab, African, Canadian, Chinese, Jewish, Muslim,
Christian, atheist; they are security guards, technicians, investment bankers,
janitors, dishwashers, lawyers, firefighters, doctors. In this daze of
horror, it is with a sinking heart that I read and hear the talk of war;
and with such sadness that I learn of the acts of violence and hate against
Muslim, Arab and Middle-Eastern Canadians. It is happening here too in
the US, but I still feel my connections most closely to Canada and Canadian
communities affected. So I pass along to you my thoughts of peace and understanding,
in this time when you must feel your communities under siege. I hope that
out of all this will come a better world, not worse.
-
I would like to take a moment to express my grief, sorrow and frustration
with regards to the terrorism campaign against the Islamic/Muslim community.
I do not belong to this community, and wish to express the fact that not
all Canadians are so incredibly ignorant and small minded as those that
beat up the 15 year boy recently. I truly hope that your members do not
feel unwelcome or unwanted. Hopefully we can band together as *CANADIANS*
to prosecute these criminals to the fullest extent of the law.
-
Though I am a Christian, an American, and am ANGRY, I want you to know
that MOST Americans while scared, accept you and your religion in the spirit
of our Constitution's "Freedom of Religion." May you find peace in these
times, and patience to deal with those IDIOTS that may be intolerant of
you.
-
It's important (to me at least) that you and all Muslims know that most
of us non-Muslims do not equate Islam with terrorism, despite the emotional,
irrational, inflammatory rhetoric in the media.
-
I am so pleased to hear that others have also written to express their
shame. [we announced that on our website] Yesterday a Muslim family was
behind me in the line-up at the grocery store and I really wanted to say
something to them to make them feel welcome in this country and this neighbourhood.
For fear of being misunderstood, I only smiled at them instead. Would your
organization let the followers of Islam know that they are welcome, treasured
members of Canadian society? Those who have acted in ignorant and intolerant
rage against Muslims or Arab-Canadians are the ones who are unwelcome here.
I am, however, fearful that senseless acts of violence will escalate. Feel
free to build a mailing list of those who have written to express their
dismay and let us know if there is some way we can help.
-
I am just writing to express my wishes for your people in these difficult
times. Hopefully you will be getting more of these supportive messages
than those full of hatred, ignorance and bigotry. I attended the multi-denominational
memorial service in Montreal on Friday and was impressed by the words of
the Imam who spoke. Stressing that the recent actions are not sanctioned
by the Koran, and that the perpetrators, like zealots from all religious
groups through history, have usurped the selected principles to justify
their own unjustifiable actions. I have heard in the media about the unspeakable
assaults and threats on so many Muslim Canadians, including children, and
am ashamed and further pained by these. Good luck to you all! If any good
comes from this recent evil, may it be a small increase in knowledge, tolerance
and understanding.
-
I have heard that Canadian Muslims are being targeted due to the attacks
in the United States. I had the idea to give my words of support - and
am glad to see from your website that others have had the same notion.
I hold to the belief that our society has grown in such a way that this
kind of intolerance is more the exception rather than the norm. I'm very
pleased by the fact that you've received many more letters of support than
you have received hate mail. It tells me that I'm not mistaken to believe
so, and I hope that's as much a comfort to you as it is to me. I must be
telling you what many others have already told you during the past few
days, I hope you don't mind me repeating the message in my own words. Thank
you for reading my message, which must be just one out of very many that
you have been receiving.
-
To all Muslim Canadians, I am writing to show my support to all Muslim
Canadians who are suffering in this time both from the tragedy on our continent
and the harassment by those who are ignorant of the very principals on
which this country is built.
-
I will do everything in my power, even die if required, to defend you and
to stop those who are targeting you without reason. They are, in doing
so, attacking the highest principals of democracy and freedom as much as
any terrorist attack.
-
The recent events in the world are extracting a terrible toll on all of
us. Although I am not Muslim, I am extending a hand in understanding to
all people of your faith. I strongly believe that your religion is not
to blame for the attacks that have occurred nor that true belivers in Islam
could carry out such terrible deads. I wish that people across the world
would look back into history and hope that they see the important contributions
to civilization that Islam has made to the developoment of civilization.
I personally believe that all people of the world must stand together,
united, in order to bring to an end the terrrible violence that has struck
at the hearts and souls of everyone.
-
During the last week, we have all been affected by the disaster in the
United States. Any violent loss of life is tragic and far reaching
in its disruption and at times in its infection. Like a plague it
can infect people with hatred, anger, suspicion and in turn they cruelly
channel this poison towards innocent and vulnerable people. This
aspect of disaster is the most disappointing to me. Misdirected anger
and fear towards sincere good people. I am deeply hurt to have witnessed
such a tragedy, and now to discover that Canadians are becoming victims
of racial slurs or violence because of their ethnicity by fellow Canadians
and other nations. Has this catastrophe in itself not been devastating
enough? I have always been proud to be Canadian because of our diversity
and acceptance. I feel we are enriched by variety. It gives
the opportunity to learn, gain knowledge and in the end a freedom to choose.
I am embellished by my wide variety of friends. Male - female; tall
-short, intelligent - less so, rich - poor, slim - overweight, funny -
sober, cholarly - rich with life experience, ... and many who attend different
houses of worship as well as those who only believe in life itself.
I am thrilled they are all accepting of me. I am writing you to apologize
for any hurt you may have lived
because of the events of this last week and to show you support in
difficult times. Please know that most Canadians feel the same way
as I do, and are not judging or accusing you for this barbarous act or
believe you capable of any. I trust that you, I and almost every
Canadian abhors and rejects violence in any form and together offer our
sympathy to its victims.
-
I just wanted to let you know that while I was horrified by the tragic
terrorist attacks on the U.S., I am equally disturbed by reports of intolerance
towards Muslims in Canada. The people believed to be responsible for the
terrorist attacks no more represent the majority of Muslims, who are peace-loving
and tolerant, than Timothy McVeigh in the U.S. or extremists in Ireland
represent true Christians. Please know that the majority of Canadians understand
that Muslim Canadians are an integral part of our nation and are working
towards a positive future for their families, their nation, their world
and faith. May God be with you at this time and always.
-
I am a Christian and a member of the xxx Society. I am deeply troubled
to hear of the abuse, harassment and even violence that is being directed
at people of the Muslim faith here in Canada and also in the United States.
I have recently heard of bomb threats against a mosque in London Ontario
and of people being pulled from their cars and attacked in the United States.
I'm sure many people exacting this abuse are claiming to be Christians.
I hope and pray that our governments will show more measured thought than
has been displayed by some of their citizens.
-
Please accept this short letter as a token of my support of the Muslim
people and Islam especially in the wake of all that is transpiring after
the attacks in New York. I have lived with Muslims in Kashmir and have
shared tea and traveled with Muslims in Pakistan and I can say without
a doubt that they are the most generous and faithful people I have met
on this earth. I have never hesitated to spread these feelings with people
in North America, and even as events unfold in America I continue to spread
the word about my incredible experiences with the Muslim people. I wish
all Muslim Canadians peace and happiness and I am sure that your faith
will see you through these difficult times. Please find it in your heart
to forgive the ignorant people who are painting all Muslims with the same
brush. God Bless.
-
I am writing to express support for the Muslim community in Canada following
Tuesday's horrific tragedy in the United States. I and hopefully all thinking
people realize that Muslims are not all terrorists - they are an integral
part of our community. We cannot judge the character of all by the actions
of a few madmen. Those who fail to understand this and instead express
hatred of all Muslims display only their own fear and ignorance. Please
know that the vast majority of Canadians support and grieve with you over
these terrible events, and pray for a peaceful resolution.
-
In all of my travels across Canada I have met and worked with many people
of different nationalities and religions. Of all the peoples
I have come to know in my travels I have had the pleasure to meet and work
with many who follow the Muslim faith. From working night shifts
in Fredericton, New Brunswick and the long talks together with a gentleman
named Ashraf, to the recent friendship I had developed with a young Muslim
woman in Calgary, Alberta who works in a restaurant I frequented often...I
have come to learn many things about those who follow the Muslim faith.
In a world where temptation is out of control, where even the most righteous
are tested daily, where as a society we promote "take what you want of
life and leave the rest" I have seen with my own eyes that your very own
followers deserve far more credit than what has been given in the last
week. The Muslims I have come to know, both personally and rofessionally,
have always shown themselves to be a sincere, honest people who very rarely
stray from their beliefs. They have proven themselves to be far more
preferrable to have as friends and companions as their actions speak very
loudly of the quality of people that the Muslim faith creates in it's followers.
Those of you I have come to know have shown themselves to be honest, reliable,
trustworthy, and very stubborn (this is not a bad thing at all as I see
it as a sign of determination within an individual). When I look at the
events today...at the attitudes that have been developing towards Muslims
in general I feel a great deal of shame for other 'white Christians' such
as myself, fear and concern for any/all who follow the Muslim religion,
and serious dread for us all as this is only the beginning of many days
to come. Too many who would call themselves Christians have already
been harassing and assaulting your fellow followers. These are not
the actions and words of Christians. These are individuals filled
with anger and hate, who thanks to large scale media propoganda, have linked
'all' Muslims with those have used these unacceptable, excessive methods
to strike back at the USA. I have always held my own belief that
the colour of one's skin, his/her religion, nationality, or anything for
that matter is irrelevant. Who you are inside, and how you treat
others is far more important than the label that men would give to one
another to 'create' differences between us. Not once in my 33 years
have I ever been insulted, mistreated, assaulted, misled, lied to, or condemned
by any of your fellow followers. In truth I experience this far more
from my own 'kind' than from those who would move to Canada and call it
home. I share your fears. I share the concern for the safety and
well being for your fellows. I share your prayers that these events
will not be blown out of proportion more so than they are already, as I
fear the direction events are taking and the consequences it holds for
'all' of us. I fear that hatred and anger towards your fellows will
become commonplace over the next few months. I also fear that many
of your fellow Muslims would be inclined to leave Canada, as the last thing
we need as a country is to have those who would refrain from sin as frequently
as yourselves desiring to find new homes. We do not need this.
You do not deserve this. You are Canadians. You have every
right to stay in this country and to live without fear of condemnation
because your religious beliefs are different. The last time I checked
Canada prided itself on the
multi-national, multi-cultural, multi-religious nature of it's citizens.
Although Mr. Bin Laden is the 'prime suspect' named by the USA, I find
it unlikely that he in fact is the author of these acts do to the exceptionally
sloppy trail of 'evidence' left for investigators to find. I cannot
lay blame, nor should I. None of us know anything at all yet.
Yes, Americans should not be sticking their noses into everything as they
do. Very few countries like Americans as they are very arrogant and
ignorant in general. Yes, after the Iraqi war was over they should
have packed up and left Saudi Arabia. They did not. Not all
Americans are without morals, only most. Not all Muslims are prone
to violent excesses in defense of their faith. Only a few. Is USA
a spawning ground for the lack of morality and sin that spreads outward
throughout the world? Certainly! Even in Canada we promote
such things too much all for the love of money and lust. But...like
xxx (the young Muslim woman I befriended in [name of Canadian city]) it
is possible to see the world with clear eyes, to see the truth of the world
around you, and yet to maintain her beliefs...her moral tandards... her
morals... even to the point of debating on whether or not she should speak
to me... she sticks to her beliefs in what can easily be seen as a 'godless
society'. I commend her. I commend all those whom I have met
over the years, and those of you I have not yet met more so than those
who would call themselves Christian once a week. You do it every
single day of your lives. Given the world we live in...that is devotion.
For what it's worth...you have my word that should I see anyone being persecutated
because of his or her beliefs, or national heretige, or being harmed by
those who follow only hate... they will have one more to defend them.
I have fought racism for many years now. Agression begets agression,
and I have no problem with defending an innocent for what I know in my
heart to be right. May God have mercy on us all, may He spare the
innocent of their persectution and suffering, may He make these days of
hatred and anger short lived, and may He grant you all the strength to
endure these days as I have come to know you as a good people.
-
In these trying times, I wish to offer my love and support to the Muslim
community. As a Christian, I am shocked and saddened by the behaviour of
some of my people towards our Muslim brothers and sisters. Just as terrorists
do not represent the Muslim community, these people do not represent Christians,
Jews, or any other sane people. Now, more than ever, we must fight
to come closer together...not drift farther apart. God be with you and
us all.
-
I am appalled at what I am reading in the news about how the Muslim people
in Canada and around the world are being treated, following the terrorist
attacks in the USA. I was, therefore, compelled to write to say that,
like most Canadians, I understand that this act was not one of rational
people, whatever their religious beliefs, and that we must stand together
during this terrible time. Please accept my condolences at what is
happening and have faith that most people in Canada know the difference
between criminals and normal people. I hope that you can all persevere
through these dark days, and know that Canada will remain a model of multicultural
living to the rest of the world.
-
It concerns me that I have heard via the media, that threats and attempted
violent acts have been perpetuated against some North American mosques,
as well as slurs and threats against individuals. I want to express my
sympathy towards all peoples of the Islamic faith who may suffer from fear
and undeserved prejudiced attitudes from fellow Canadians. You are all
brothers and sisters, more over you are just as Canadian as the rest of
those that may feel threatened by the events of the last week. We have
but one globe to live on and there is no such thing, at least in my estimation,
as a right or wrong way of life. All peoples of all faith, culture, creed
and religion have the right to live in peace in any country, territory
that they chose. After all with the exception of those first nations people,
every last one of us is from somewhere else. May you find that the hearts
of your fellow Canadians will be open and allow you to go on with yours
lives as you did before the awful week of Sept. 11, 2001. May peace and
serenity be yours now and for all time to come.
-
I am just clamouring to express to you my deep sorrow at the appalling,
but few, incidents of violence that have been springing up against some
institutions and members of the Muslim community since the very upsetting
attacks on the US. I want to pledge to you that in word and deed
I will do all that is in my power to stem prejudice and hatred against
Muslims in Canada. I am sorry for what has happened, and for what
may happen as a result of the snowball effect and heightened American drumbeating.
With great sorrow and deep respect xxx.
-
For those against violent retribution, how would you put an end to terrorism?
History has shown this to be a thorny problem that even great kings in
the past have yet to find the ideal solution to: how to keep the peace
and resolve injustice without shedding blood or appearing to be as degraded
or as barbaric as one's attackers. It is difficult, as civilized men, to
justify behaving as barbarians, even after seeing such a travesty. On the
other hand, when we see jubilation in the streets over such a thing, we
are reminded of our own relatively primitive emotions, often bloodthirsty
and craving revenge. I know this is my own experience, and it is a very
difficult thing to overcome, to just lash out like a wounded animal. I
doubt we will find the solution so quickly, only because our tempers and
our indignity are strongly roused at this point. It will help to keep a
level head and not lose our own humanity. As accustomed as many have become
towards instant gratification, this is not an appropriate response for
a situation like this. There is nothing instant anyone can offer or act
upon, that will justify in repaying such an instant act of murder. This
will test not only our resolve and what we hold to be just and right, but
our own internal qualities, whether we impatiently demand an entire population
be wiped out or whether we exercise patience and self control in rooting
out the guilty. This may, in fact, take many years of diligent search,
exercising higher qualities of patience, in not jumping to conclusions
in accusing every person we meet of mid-eastern background and by doing
so, turning this into a witch-hunt, but instead, by leaving no stone unturned.
This isn't Salem, Mass. I think it's in this searching that one demonstrates
a higher
application of the laws of mercy and justice, not in just the primitive
lashing out, and therefore demonstrates a higher respect for law, order,
justice and human life. The common and sometims popular saying "kill them
all, let God sort it out" is wrong because we, too, will be judged by this
standard someday. We, too, live by the 10 commandments, one of which states
"do not kill". Would we volunteer to sacrifice our own high standards of
conduct, of respect for human life, to appease our outrage? What do we
become then? We should not disrespect all human life as our attackers have,
in seeking justice. This would make us as degraded as they have been, and
is the price we pay for being a civilized society. One thing which I think
will help tremendously is if we seek to try and bridge the gulf between
Muslims living in America and Canada, and not only seek to try and understand
their point of view, but to seek the continued assistance and advice of
the community leaders. I have no cause to believe that these people, who
have come to North America to escape the tyranny of their homeland, are
any more interested in seeing this primitive warrior mentality succeed,
than any other American or Canadian. In fact, I think this may spur many
Muslim communities, and individuals, in North America, to work harder than
ever before, towards the solution of justice. Incidentally, I came across
a couple of things, with the help of a Muslim friend, which demonstrates
that the terrorists are, in fact, in violation of Islam and may in fact
be defined as enemies of Islam, another fact I learned today from members
of Toronto's Muslim community.
-
Recent events have seen an unfortunate and stupid reaction from some Canadians.
Please understand that these people who have engaged in senseless acts
of violence towards Arab-Canadians are no more representative of Canadians
than the terrorists involved in the attacks on New York are representative
of followers of Islam. I am ashamed of these acts of intolerance
by fellow Canadians and express my apologies to the Islamic Community in
Toronto.
-
I'm a Presbyterian minister in xxx [Ontario city] (no church though),
work in a multicultural environment, and teach comparative religion at
xxx College in xxx. I just wanted to write to express my sorrow at
what has happened in New York and the effect it has had on Muslim communities
throughout the world. I am certainly no expert on Islam, but I do enough
to know that Islam a very rich religion with a strong and deep spiritual
tradition and that what has happened does not represent mainstream Islam.
I also know that while the terrorist acts were carried out by extremists
who were
may be Muslim, all religions have our extremists who use religion to
justify their actions of hate and destruction. I just wanted you to know
that many people do distinguish between extremists and the rest of the
Muslim community. My prayers are with you, as much as they are for all
the victims of the New York attack.
-
Like the rest of the world, I am horrified at the recent events in the
United States. I am equally dismayed by news reports of attacks on Muslims
in Canada and abroad. Please know that these acts are being perpetrated
by a select few and by no means reflect the views of the Canadian public
at large. If there is any lesson to be learned, let it be that ignorance
and hate are never the answer. May we all be blessed and find comfort
in our various faiths.
-
Let us pray for one another.
-
I am so sorry to hear about the cruel, stupid remarks and assaults some
of your members have suffered over the past few days. The vast majority
of
Canadians know that people of your faith community are just like the rest
of us... shocked, saddened and sickened by the recent actions of a few.
I wish there was some tangible way I could show my support; failing that,
I hope that you will trust that I am only one voice among many who wish
you well, and are keeping our fellow Canadian Muslims in our prayers.
-
I have been watching world events with an ever-increasing sense of horror
and loss. I am particularly disturbed by the backlash incidents against
the Muslim community in Toronto and elsewhere in Canada. Please let your
members know that I and many other non-Muslim Canadians share their sadness
and outrage at the despicable response of a profoundly misguided few. Maybe
someday people of all faiths will come to understand that hatred feeds
on itself -- obviously that day is distant. No matter what our faith or
nationality, hatred and bigotry injure us all. I wish that the people
responsible for these backlash incidents could be made to realize that
they are acting from the same sick impulses as the terrorists themselves.
-
I am writing to show my support to all Muslim Canadians who are suffering
in this time both from the tragedy on our continent and the harassment
by those who are ignorant of the very principals on which this country
is built. I will do everything in my power, even die if required, to defend
you and to stop those who are targeting you without reason. They are, in
doing so, attacking the highest principals of democracy and freedom as
much as any terrorist attack.
-
I just wanted to drop you a note of support. I am a Fifth generation
Anglican Canadian. Every friend and family member I have spoken with
are extremely disappointed by the jump to blame all muslims for the tragedy
that is unfolding in the US. This conclusion is as irrational as blaming
all Catholics and Protestants for the troubles in Ireland. Please
know that there are ignorant and lazyminded people in every country, unfortunately
we are no different. Also please know that when comments of "go home"
or "go back from where you came from" are cast by the uneducated, the majority
of Canadians believe that you are already AT home. As one Canadian
to another I just was to say "hang in there".
-
I'm a Canadian student from the University of xxx who is currently at an
internship at xxx in xxx, Texas. Over the past few days, I've seen
an increasing number of articles discussing the backlash against the Muslim
and Arab community in both the United States and Canada. To put it frankly,
this makes me sick. I'm looking for an outlet to let the Muslim and
Arab community know that I, and many others, FULLY support you. PLEASE
do not let the acts of a small number of uneducated, un-intelligent people
represent the people of North America as a whole. Again, I fully support
you and appologize profusely for the disrespectful acts of a few.
-
I just want to say as one canadian to a group of others, I am so sorry
that the tragic events of tuesday are creating an atmosphere of intolerance.
It sickens me that some people can be so small minded as to try to link
an entire race or religious practice to the work of a small group of terrorists.
Please know that the majority of your fellow canadians do not share this
stupid view, that unfortunately is making the lives of many of our citizens
a living hell. I suppose it's too much for these pea brain morons to see
that they are engaging in the exact same hateful, racist behaviour that
allowed this tragedy to occur. I hope that the authorities and intelligent
canadians continue to condemn the behaviour of the few and speak of coming
to together to mourn as one instead of looking for scapegoats.
-
I came across your website yesterday, and read some of the material
in an effort to add to my admittedly thin knowledge of Islam. This confirmed
what I had known before, that yours is a faith of tolerance, peace, and
great beauty. I've been reading awful reports of backlash against Canadian
Muslims, and I felt compelled to send this e-mail to let you know that
this Canadian, for one, doesn't buy into the media scapegoating. Please
know that Muslims are respected and loved as fellow citizens and fellow
beings by the thinking people of Canada.
-
I may not be sending this to the right place, but after all the hate mail
and attacks Muslim religious buildings in the U.S. I felt that I had to
say something. The attacks on Muslim religious buildings is as wrong as
the attacks of the high jackers. Just as those that hold the same religious
beliefs as the high jackers do not condone their actions, many other Americans
do not condone the actions a few groups that are terrorizing the innocent.
We are all Americans who have come here for some kind of freedom no matter
what our religious beliefs are. And we need to stand together as
free people. My condolences to those who have been affected by all of these
horribly acts.
-
I am sure that many, many people have not hesitated to write to you expressing
their outrage at the events of September 11, and their hatred of Muslims
for their perceived role as terrorists. I thought you might like to know
that at least one Canadian is able to distinguish between a Muslim and
a criminal. I know that those Muslims with extreme political and religious
views are a minority. One of my greatest fears following the Attack on
America is that Muslims would be the targets of hate and harassment, as
the Japanese were following Pearl Harbor. And it appears that some of those
fears have been realized. I cannot give up my belief that Canada
is enriched by being home to so many ethnic and religious communities,
such as Muslim. Here in Toronto, especially, children have a unique opportunity
to grow up surrounded by many different faces, voices and opinions. They
can hope to grow up not mistrusting or disliking those who are different
and I think that is a great gift. I was born in Canada and have lived here
all my life. I want my country to welcome and accept Muslims and all other
people. I am glad you here. I respect your views, your rights, and your
differences. On Tuesday we saw in the most horrifying way imaginable what
hatred can accomplish. I wish more people could learn an immediate lesson
from that and not simply lash out with hatred at those who are close at
hand. I know that your community is saddened and angered just as everyone
else, and I sincerely hope that Canadians will show you the respect and
the understanding that you deserve. Please feel free communicate my thoughts
to your members in whatever means you feel appropriate.
-
In the wake of what has taken place in the United States, I wanted to personally
send my support to the Muslim society of Canada. It is a sad thing
that because of the acts of a few extremists, a whole society can be branded
and treated along with the few that have caused this tragic event.
I also know that there are acts of hate being directed to the Muslim Society
as a whole. I am not one of these people. Whereas the voice
of anger is often louder than the call of support, I wanted to make my
voice heard that there are many more people who find these acts against
the Muslim society as a whole simply outrageous. It is often easy
for a person to direct their anger at a group than to deal with the real
issues behind their misdirected emotions. Again, I wish all Muslims
across the world peace in this time of crisis and to reinforce my personal
support at such a confusing and troubling time.
-
Just to let you know, not all North Americans feel that all Muslims are
to blame for the horrific events of the past week. Even though it is not
entirely proven, but most fingers point in the direction of those who hold
Muslim beliefs, it still does not make all who hold those beliefs accountable.
I do however wish that those who live in these middle eastern countries
would try and use diplomacy, not violence and death to solve their political
and religious debates. Either way, I do hope that not all Muslim or Islamic
people are held accountable... what we saw in New York and Washington could
only be the work of the purest form of Evil, and I am sure that we both
feel the same that those who have done this, deserve to pay in just as
horrific a way.

I am writing because I am an aglo-Canadian who is worried for our citizens
who are Muslims. I hope that you don't judge all Canadians by any
bad behaviour of others who treat you badly because of the attacks on the
United States. People who are doing this to Muslims are as bad as
terrorists who assume that all Americans are bad because of the decisions
of their government. I once lived in a townhome complex in Canada
with about 30 families and the nicest people in the whole complex were
Muslim. This sparked a great affection for them and a respect for
your people and your culture. I feel very badly for the people who
are suffering in New York but I also feel badly that you might have come
here for a better life and will be treated badly because you will be blamed
for this.
-
I am a non Muslim person from Ontario. I am appalled at hearing of hate
mail being sent out to people in the aftermath of this horror. I am sending
support e-mail instead. I am afraid the days ahead may be hard for people
of Muslim faith in dealing with a world that seems to need to blame, instead
of understand. I just want you to know that the whole world is not insane.
This tragedy is world wide, but I am afraid that the brunt may get directed
wrongly towards a visible group of people. I know it is insane, I just
want to send a word, that all is not insane. There are many people who
are sensitive and caring, and aware. God bless.
-
I am writing to express concern for the Muslim community. I worry
about harrassment. As a Jew, I have dealt with being scapegoated. I don't
want this to happen to the members of Islam. I also wish to express my
condolences to anyone who may be grieving family, relatives, friends or
colleagues.
-
Please accept our best wishes for you and your community during this time
of tragedy and confusion. As a Christian and a British Columbian I hope
you realize and accept that my family's prayers are with and for your community,
your families and your friends. Please know also that even if it is factual
that some professed adherents to your faith were responsible for the carnage,
that we and many other Canadians fully realize the compassionate doctrine
of your beliefs and we understand that the responsibility lies with specific
individuals and not you and your loved ones, friends, families and religious
community. God bless you all and keep you safe. With our deep respect and
utmost feelings of friendship.
-
What has happened in New York and Washington is terrible. It would
be equally terrible if all Muslims were painted with the same brush.
I believe that most Muslims do not believe in violence, and are as shocked
and horrified as all Christians. Please be strong. There will
be a few radical Christians who may say and do things that do not represent
the feelings of the rest of us. In the end, the villians will be
found and punished. I just pray that the Muslim community will not
suffer for the radical act of a few.
-
I have heard disturbing news on the radio that members of your community
have been subjected to verbal and physical abuse as a result of yesterday's
terrorist acts in the United States. Such activities are an aberrant
and do not represent the views and thoughts of the majority of non-Islamic
Canadians. I am a sixty year old white male of no religious persuasion.
However, I did live for sixteen years in xxx, Ontario in the same community
that contained an Islamic Mosque on xxx Drive. The Mosque and its
members could only be characterized as being good neighbours who were kind
and considerate. They were not, in any sense or in any way, the stereotyped
wild-eyed fanatic. Frankly, they looked and acted like virtually
everyone else, that is happy, sad, concerned, frustrated, friendly and
so forth. The Imam (I regret I cannot spell his name) of the Mosque
addressed any community concerns (which were usually the parking situation
each Friday) in the community paper in reasonable and accommodating ways.
There was no occasion where I had to approach the Mosque for assistance
but I always had the sense that if I had I would not have been refused.
Every religous and non-believer community has its unthinking dolts and
fools. It is a sad fact but a true one. At times like these,
the dolts and fools come to the fore and threaten and take actions against
innocents in an identifiable community. Sometimes, to our everlasting
shame, normally rational people join in with the dolts and fools.
I cannot prevent this but I can say to you that you are not alone and that
the majority of your fellow Canadians believe that you are as disgusted
and shocked at the events of yesterday as everyone else. You have
been an integral art of Canada since its creation and have helped make
the Country one of the most envied in the world. I have every expectation
that this will continue as we move forward. Please do not give into
the threats and violence. Stand tall and be proud of your culture
and eligion and be proud Canadians.

Considering the recent tragedy that has befallen all people in the Western
world, I wanted to extend my condolences, through your organization, for
all who have been affected either directly or indirectly for this attack.
I wish also to express my condolences for all Muslims who will assuredly
be numbered among the murdered. While obviously there can be no suggestion
that any of the dead were any less deserving than others of their horrific
fate, it is perhaps important, given some unfortunate prejudices in the
West, to recognize that innumerable Muslims within our community will be
in great pain over this tragedy, and deserve their time to grieve and pray
for guidance. Let us not ignorantly and insensitively hector our
Muslim citizens into having to perpetually defend or explain themselves.
This is a tragedy for all of us, and all of us must have the time and peace
to grieve with our family, friends, and God. As a (non-practicing) Jew,
I am also aware of the distressing animosity between our two communities
that has flared up from time to time, both publically and privately.
While I personally believe that this has had little, if anything, to do
with questions of religion and faith, it nevertheless concerns me that
this recent tragedy might exacerbate the tensions between the more intolerant
segements of both our communities. I would like, therefore, to stand
up and beside all peace-loving and tolerant Canadian Muslims and state
that this nation has been made immeasurably richer by its Muslim citizens,
that no act of terrorism should ever be proscribed to an entire community,
and that only through working together as a diverse body can we ever hope
to make this world safe for our children -- and that means ALL of our children.
Now, perhaps more than ever, we must affirm our committment to the civil
society we have built, and our committment to one another as citizens of
that society. Our religions must now be our comfort, and our guide, never
a thing to be made to apologize for. We can only progress in this
way. Any other will keep us trapped in the worldly cycle of aggression
and revenge. And there can be no justice found there. I am
a writer living in xxx [Quebec]. If I might be at all able to offer
your excellent site any service, be they words or otherwise in this difficult
time, please do not hesitate to reply to this email.
-
Like millions of other Canadians who count Muslims among our friends, neighbours,
co-workers, and fellow citizens, I am distressed to hear of the taunts,
threats, and abuse being inflicted upon your community by a few ignorant,
intolerant individuals. Events of the past week have brought more than
enough pain to peace-loving people around the world, and to run against
one another in this way can only bring more hurt. Please believe that to
most of us our Muslim compatriots are valued, respected, and welcome members
of the Canadian family. Like others, I will resolve to do all that I can
to promote a positive change in attitudes. In the meantime, though, please
continue to be courageous and patient. We all need one another, perhaps
never more than now. In peace and friendship xxx.

I am well aware that many of you are being accused of something that you
did not do. I just wanted to assure you my family and I have nothing to
do with all the hatred against you. What has happened is very tragic, and
I'm sure most of you feel the same too, just because the terrorists may
be the same race as you gives no one permission to accuse you. What has
happened has left the whole world wondering what to do and what is to come.
The fact of going to war scares both my family and I. It would be
an awful thing to loose someone close to me especially friends and family
members. I send out all thoughts and prayers to every single one of you
who has been accused. In conclusion I just want to say I'm sorry
again, and if there's anything I can do I promise to do my best at it.

I am a 15 year-old Catholic girl that attends xxx Highschool in xxx Ontario,
Canada. I would like to offer my support to you. My school, family and
friends are all devastated about the act of terrorism that occurred on
September 11th as I’m sure you are too. I would also like to apologize
for the people that make rude remarks and discriminate against you.I think
that it’s unfair to blame you, your friends and family for something you
had nothing to do with. Once again our prayers are with you and all the
people involved in the incident.
-
I have been deeply saddened by the attacks. After hearing all the
things that have been happening to all people of different religions and
race I took upon myself to write to you about how I feel. The people
who take actions into there own hands, and feel that they have the right
to attack people of certain races and religions because they feel, that
these people should be punished for what happened in the united states
over the past weeks. The person who has done these events should be punished
but proof of the person being involved should be presented and the united
states has been acting on impulse and so have the people, by hating all
people of the certain races and religions and beliefs. Thank you for your
time and I have the deepest sympathy for all who have been hurt or lost
loved ones...

This letter is regarding our concerns and support toward all Arabic and
Muslim people. After the tragic incident that occurred in New York, more
people than before became even more ignorant. We know that people now will
hurt or threaten you just because of the way you look or the language you
speak, but hopefully more of us realize that none of that matters! I give
more respect to Arabic and Muslim people just for sticking to what they
believe in and staying strong. Hopefully people come to their senses about
this and realize that it is just a coincidence that you speak the same
language or believe in the same things that Osama bin Ladan (suspect)
believes in. Or maybe if your image resembles Osama bin Ladan, you may
look alike on the outside, but you are definitely not the same person on
the inside. I, along with many of the xxx Students, wish you
all the luck and support you need!
-
This letter is to help send my condolences for those are suffering for
the things others have done. All Muslims should not be treated as
if they did the terrorism in New York to the World Trade Center. When even
if a Muslim did the horrifying crime, that does not mean just because you
are a Muslim, you had something to do with it, and you should not be punished
for others mistakes. Most of you probably feel very bad for the terrorism,
and you might be having a hard time dealing with it at the moment, with
out having to worry about being blamed for it. So with all heart
I send my condolences, for those who are suffering.
-
I have heard about the hate crimes committed, and I am very disappointed
by this news. I believe that punishing people who have a different religion
and/or different race is completely wrong and disrespectful. Punishing
innocent Arabs who had absolutely nothing to do with the events that
took place this September eleventh, is sickening to say the least. The
terrorists that committed these wrongful things are indeed wrong themselves.
And I know people feel bad and angry towards these terrorists, but for
people to then commit hate crimes against others just because their race
and/or religion happens to be the same or similar is just as wrong. These
people who create hate crimes are they themselves terrorists in a different
way, there is no doubt about it. These victims of the hate crimes are just
as innocent and just as guilty as any other American or Canadian citizens.
For the past week I had been saddened, not just because of the bombings
that have occurred, but the reactions of people as well. Yesterday, I saw
a high school student wearing a burn Mecca shirt, and my heart crumbled
inside as I felt a rush of anger. I wanted to retaliate and tell this guy
that not all people of that religion were involved in the terrorist acts,
but I still remained calm. I really, truly believe that if someone doesn't
stop the racist people, that more innocent people will die, and I don't
feel that this at all just. Where's the justice in society? And what ever
happened to the saying, "innocent until proven guilty"? This is not
fair for anybody!
-
I`m am writing this letter in support. My name is xxx and I am 15 years
old. I attend xxx Highschool in xxx[Ontario]. I do not like how some people
are treating Muslims or Arabs. Some people are being very
ignorant and rude towards Muslims or Arabs. I think people are just
acting out of hate for what happened and need someone to blame for it.
I think it is very rude and I do not like how people are treating Arabs
or Muslims. It is not very fair at all. I think that the people who are
showing hatred towards Arabs or Muslims don`t really understand. I think
that all of this needs to stop. Thank-You For Your Time!
-
I have been listening to the news and have heard about the horrible things
that have been happening to some of you. I am so sorry. I understand
the anger but I believe you know the people who do these terrible things
do not represent most of the non- Muslims in this country. My thoughts
are with you. Take care.
-
Please excuse me if this is not the source I should have written to but
I am a Jewish adult woman from Grand Bend, Ontario who would like to give
you my support through the racial treatment I am viewing on the television
against your people. I know little about your religion but as Canadians,
as Americans I am so sorry people are painting you with the same brush
as the monster terrorists are being painted. Please forgive the ignorance
of so many people.
-
I am so disheartened and ashamed of the acts of some of my fellow Canadians
in the past few days, that I felt it necessary to pass on some kind of
encouragement to you. Please know that there are many of us, of all different
faith groups and denominations who are deeply concerned about the safety
of our Muslim neighbours during this difficult time. We completely
understand that the Muslim faith and the people of Islam are peaceful,
and that all you want in this, our country is to have that peace and to
feel safe, not only in your homes, but certainly in the streets where you
walk, in the schools where your children seek their education and anywhere
else you should choose to be. I am ashamed of those who ridicule you.
It is an unconscionable act. Some of the scenes I observed on the
news tonight, sicken me. Please know that I will be praying for you
and your loved ones. This is indeed a trying time for all the people
of the earth. It need not be a time of hatred when we should be actively
seeking ways to support each other. Be strong in the days to come.
I know that this is hard, but we are all thinking of you.
-
I am another person who wants to add her voice in support of Canadian Muslims
in particular, and of the true Muslim peoples of the world. I live
in an apartment building complex in xxx, Alberta. Many of my neighbours
are Muslims. The first thing I wanted to do after the attacks on
the States was to hug my Muslim neighbours, but I think they would have
thought I was crazy, so I've just kept smiling and saying 'hello'!
I still feel like that isn't enough, I would like to reach out to my neighbours
in some way. I have even considered phoning the Mosque to see if
there is something I can do. Also, I would like to know if the 15
year old boy who was beaten is okay. I was very upset when I heard
about that. I don't know how to contact him so I wish him well
through this site.
-
First let me say as a Non-Muslim, I have found your site to be very
beautiful and informative! I arrived here after the horrible attacks in
the States, and I wished to learn more about Islam and perhaps give myself
more of an understanding of what is going on. Your site was very informative
and although I have read quite a bit about Islam, I had never seen or heard
about the "Tolerance" speech. I found great comfort in reading this and
learning about the Christian Monks of Sinai. Why does the media not publish
these things along with all the horrible things? I also find it interesting
that in Afghanistan, they are destroying buddhist statues and temples.
Are these people really muslim? My heart goes out to Muslims everywhere
who are being intimidated by
ignorant people. We all need to learn more about each other and it
is too bad that CNN and the like are not giving airtime to help us all
understand that Islam is not our enemy! The President has spoken out against
hate-crimes, but some are afraid of what they do not understand. I
have book-marked your site so I can return and continue reading!
-
I am a Christian residing in xxx [B.C.]. Like many other people,
I have been deeply saddened and troubled by the events in the U.S.A. and
now set to unfold in Afghanistan. Our countries will now be in an
undefined state of war, inwhich more innocent lives are sure to be lost
in the future. Many, if not all of the people I have talked to - Christian
and non-Christian - are in agreement that the actions of the terrorists
and their supporters is not a credible reflection of our understanding,
albeit limited, of the teachings of your faith. I visited your web-based
comparison of Islam and Christianity and was moved by the respect that
you hold for those of other faiths, and particularly by your devotion to
the One True God. I am certain that you will have been a target of
abuse, probably predating the events of 11 September. I hope fervently
that you will know that there are many, not of your religion, who will
pray for our Lord's blessing on your people.
-
I am not really sure if this is where I should be sending this e-mail,
but I am so disheartened and ashamed of the acts of some of my fellow Canadians
in the past few days, that I felt it necessary to pass on some kind of
-
encouragement to you. Please know that there are many of us, of all different

-
I simply wish to express my sadness for the attacks and slurs against you
in this, our country, Canada. There is much work to do in the area
of tolerance for all of us. My thoughts and prayers are with you and with
our world in this unsettled time. I will try in whatever way I can
to spread the message of peace.
-
In light of the catastrophic events in NY and Washington, I wish to convey
my deepest sympathies to you and yours who were touched. Religion
had nothing to do with the evil that occurred there. I fit right in with
the majority of your letters, thankfully. Unfortunately, the fanatics
are the most agressive! As in the Muslim faith, we all have our bad
apples. I've become interested in the Islamic faith and found your sight
very informative!
-
I am a white, english speaking, catholic woman of British origin. I am
writing to you, to offer my apologies for anyone who has offended you because
of your religion. Unfortunately due to the nature of man, some are ignorant
and bigotted, even racist. This is due to lack of education....a lack of
social integration... a lack of faith. In todays world.... when we should
be all living peacefully together, after so many thousands of years wars,
it must make our Gods (yours and mine) very sad. I am hoping that you will
understand that the majority of Canadians are just like you and I, wanting
to build a better life in Canada for ourselves and our families. To live
peacefully, with good health. To live a good life, hurting no one. I go
to work every day, I have a mortgage, I have a family. I have my faith.
I am just like you..... So each time I see a Muslim on the street, I smile,
wanting desperately to say " Let's be Canadians together... let's not worry
about our religious differences..." I care about you, please care about
me. I want you to know, that most of us accept Canadian Muslims as our
fellow compatriots. I want you to know, that most of us know that you have
no tolerance for terrorism... indeed your families in your mother countries
may have been hurt by the terrorists. If this has happened, I am so sorry.
It is a very sad day for me, because I am beginning to realise the sorry
state of affairs of our world. So I will pray for you in my house of God,
and I will ask that you pray for me in your house of God. Maybe together
we can find some peace in this world...
-
Over the past 4 months I have heard a number of Muslim scholars on
radio and TV eloqently explain
their position on the WTC/Washington disaster in attempts to avert
backlash. For those who are students
of history, like myself, these explanations are just fine. However,
in defense of the Canadian Muslim
Community, I would like to see Muslims develop arguments that 'truckdrivers
and school children'
can more readily grasp. For example, throughout history, there are
probably more examples of wars, where Muslims have fought Muslim than Muslims
verses another religion. In fact Muslims are fighting Muslims in Afhganistan
as you read this. And we had the Iran/Iraq war. And then you have the most
critical question of all: Why are we having conflict in the middle east?
Answer: In 1948, the Jewish people invaded Palistine and carved out a piece
of Palistinian property based on 2 and 3 thousand year old history. This
is tantamount to the same reasoning as if the Cree Indians would suddenly
take up arms and decide that based on ancient history, Canada is "their
sovereign country". In the final analysis, the fundamental stuggle in the
middle east is not about religion, it is a struggle over land ownership
(sovereignty). Similarly, in the final analysis, the current underlying
issue in Afhganistan is largely about a multi-millionare demagogue (with
a small group of supporters) attempting to highjact Islam in order to satisfy
his own personal rational as to how the world should turn. Islam won't
let it happen. Much like Christianity, Islam is not just one big monolithic
tribe of sheeplike followers. I write this because I have Muslim friends.
Peace be with you.

I know that you have received many letters of support already, but I just
feel like I have to add my voice too, possibly with a different slant.
I am not a Muslim, I'm a 30 year old caucasian female , and although I
don't know very much about Islam, I do know that Canada and the United
States are built on the foundation of acceptance and equality for every
human being regardless of race, religion, sex, politics and beliefs.
I feel that it is arrogant to even say that "us" Canadians accept and welcome
Muslims, because that is like saying we belong by right, and we are tolerant
enough to allow you in too. The reality is that we all came from
different countries and faiths at some point. To me it seems ignorant
to have to say that "we" welcome Muslims, when who are we?? WE are
Canadians, all of us, including Muslims, so the next time someone says
"we" welcome you in Canada, I would hope to hear someone of the Muslim
faith say "I respect that, and welcome you too"!! Please be strong
in the days to come, and hold your heads high as rightful Canadians.
-
I learned about your site on the TV program, 100 Huntley Street.
We need to educate ourselves about this innocent group of individuals who
have been grossly persecuted since Sept. 11. I especially enjoyed reading
the Islamic teaching on terrorism, suicide and murder, which happened on
Sept. 11. We as Christians and Muslims, have fundamentally equal
morals and values. Christians also believe suicide and murderers
will find their place in the lake of fire. Keep us informed on your website
as the events unfold.
-
I read your mandate. I think you most
certainly fulfill it. I am a non-muslim but I can see that your web
site is set out in an organized and educated fashion. Thank you for
having it available to those of us who wish to learn more about your faith
- it's fascinating to me - I took religions of the world in first year
university but that was 30 years ago and I wasn't really paying attention
- now I'm paying attention. Aren't we all ... My personal theory is (please
don't tell my Catholic priest:) that there is one, omnipotent, loving
and merciful God and that by some evil design of the powers of confusion
we have all decided to call Him by a different name. I believe that all
of us have a little bit of it right and it won't be until the end of life
as we know it that it will all become clear, and hopefully the one God
of all will forgive us for being so dense. This way, no one who is devoted
to their faith and practices love and compassion in God's name will be
punished. If we both (Muslim and Christian) believe in an all merciful
God, then we have to believe He'll bless us all if we but ask. We are all
children of God. God bless you, and thank you for this opportunity to learn.
-
This is just a quick note to say that while I may not be Muslim, I have
Muslim friends and my heart goes out to all the people of Afghanistan,
and the middle east in general, and their families, wherever they may reside.
I wish for peace for them. I wish for peace in our country.
I hope that we can get beyond persecuting people based on their religious
differences and appreciate the value of each human life. May peace
be with all of us.
Thank
you all. We really appreciate your taking the time out to write us to convey
your beautiful sentiments!!!!!
